Kumite (sparring) is divided into various categories of pre-arranged sparring. It is essential that the attack is strong at all times. He/she should exercise control when aiming for the face, but some contact ought to be made if possible when attacking the mid-section.

On no account should the defender follow through and make contact. After blocking, he/she should focus his/her counter-attack just short of the target.

The  Six  Ways  of  Kumite

Kihon Ippon Kumite

(basic one-attack sparring) allows both opponent to attack in turn.

Kaeshi Ippon Kumite

 basic one-attack sparring (with returning step counter-attack)

Sanbon Kumite  

three-attack sparring (pre-arranged techniques are used to defend and counter-attack)

Gohon Kumite 

 five-attack sparring (as Sanbon Kumite)

Jiyu Ippon Kumite

 semi free one-attack sparring

Jiyu Kumite

freestyle, which enables the Karate-ka to use freely any of the techniques against their opponent without warning. At all times, you should remember to take in consideration the essence of Karate-Do: Karate ni sentanashi (means: there is no first attack in Karate)
