Kata - Forms
It will take your entire life to learn Karate: there is no limit
Gichin Funakoshi
Kata, which means formal exercise, consist of a set of pre-determined moves which are design to be performed in a set sequence against an imaginary attackers or attackers, armed and unarmed.
With this in mind the Karate-ka (practitioner) should not only understand his Kihon (basic) techniques but also be aware of the Bunkai (applications).
The majority of time Kata is practised alone to enable the Karate-ka his own time to visualise how these techniques would be effective in reality, but constant practise with a partner is also a must, to ascertain distance and timing when applying Kihon applications.
Courtesy is shown throughout Karate and is always made apparent when practising Kata by the Karate-ka beginning and ending with a bow (Rei).
